Job description: Engineer II – Fort Collins Field Office (San Luis Valley, CO)Ducks Unlimited, Inc., (DU) the world’s leading wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a driven and experienced civil engineer. While training and collaboration will be in Fort Collins, this role offers flexibility, allowing placement in either the Fort Collins Field Office or remote locations such as Colorado Springs, Pueblo, or the San Luis Valley. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated dedicated conservation team of biologists and engineers responsible for the planning, design, and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Operating out of the Fort Collins Field Office, covering seven states, focusing on Colorado, Wyoming, and Western Nebraska, this role prioritizes projects in the San Luis Valley.Qualifications:Candidates must possess a B.S. in Civil Engineering or an equivalent degree, along with at least 2 years of experience. Applicants must be either a registered EIT or PE obtaining registration in assigned states. Qualifications include proficiency in hydrology, hydraulics, open channel flow, experience with earthen dams, spillways, structures, pipes, erosion control, riverbank stabilization, construction staking, inspection, cost estimation, and project management. Candidates will conduct topographic surveys using Trimble GPS. Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil3D is essential for creating TIN surfaces from surveys and LiDAR, developing construction plansets and exhibits, and generating earthwork quantities for projects using alignments, corridors, feature lines, profiles, earthwork, and grading tools. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are paramount. Candidates should demonstrate self-motivation, goal orientation, and the ability to solve problems within close team-based relationships.Responsibilities:Ducks Unlimited Engineers are engaged in a wide array of wetlands, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects, overseeing them from initial feasibility through construction. The project lifecycle encompasses scoping and proposal development, surveying, drafting, engineering design, project bidding, construction staking, field inspection, and construction management. Integral is the cultivation of close working relationships with local, state, and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners. Building and nurturing strong collaborative ties are essential for project success. This role entails 50% travel and work outside normal business hours. Expect week-long travel periodically, with the remaining travel primarily comprising day trips. Overnight stays are contingent on the candidate’s location and project needs. Weekend work is seldom.Specific duties include:

  • Collaborate with biological staff to prepare proposal scopes of work and budgets.
  • Interpret, adapt, and apply principles of engineering, surveying, and construction management.
  • Develop comprehensive engineering designs, reports, project plans, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide support for permit application development.
  • Conduct field inspections and oversee construction management as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules by consultants and contractors.
  • Serve as a contracting officer, creating bidding documents and managing budgets to ensure contract compliance.
  • Perform fieldwork, including strenuous outdoor activities in challenging environmental conditions, and independently working in remote areas. Proficiency in operating an ATV when required.
  • Demonstrate willingness to work outside normal business hours, travel overnight, and occasionally extend travel for extended periods. Weekend work is infrequent and is not a common occurrence.
  • Supervise technician staff and serve as a representative of DU with stakeholders.
  • Possess knowledge or experience in western water law, with a particular emphasis on Colorado.

Benefits/Pay: Salary ranges from $65,000 to $85,000 per year, based on experience and education including a variable compensation incentive program.
