Waiting for everyone to be served before eating is a common etiquette rule, but new research shows the discomfort is mostly felt by the person breaking it. Study participants reported feeling much more awkward eating first than they anticipated others would feel watching it. Even with permission to go ahead, the “food-waiter” still experienced significant guilt. To create a more relaxed dining atmosphere, serving everyone simultaneously may be a better approach than enforcing a strict wait rule.
