Italy plans to open the Mediterranean’s first dolphin sanctuary, the San Paolo Dolphin Refuge, by mid-2026. This refuge will provide a natural, supervised environment for formerly captive dolphins as marine parks close across Europe. Prioritizing welfare, the sanctuary, located off Taranto, will offer medical care, monitoring, and secure enclosures. The project aims to create a haven where dolphins can live with dignity after their time in captivity, focusing on quality of life rather than simply housing large numbers of animals.
