A US Justice Department indictment accuses four individuals of conspiring to illegally export advanced Nvidia GPUs to China, circumventing export controls meant to hinder China’s development of supercomputers for military and surveillance applications. The conspirators allegedly used a front company, Janford Realtor, to purchase and export the GPUs. Kickbacks and money laundering involving transfers from Chinese companies were involved. US Prosecutor Noah Stern emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting that the exported chips were Nvidia’s most advanced at the time. Evidence suggests connections to the Chinese Communist Party.
