A large, decade-long study reveals that the life-extending benefits of exercise are significantly reduced by long-term exposure to polluted air, particularly when fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels are high. While physical activity still contributes to longevity, its impact is considerably diminished in areas with poor air quality. Researchers suggest that while people shouldn’t stop exercising outdoors, improving air quality would maximize the health advantages gained from physical activity. The study highlights the critical link between environmental factors and the effectiveness of healthy habits.
