The City Commission cut funding for the event in September, citing a broader budget realignment. This decision follows the recent defunding of the city’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department and funding cuts for Juneteenth. Human Rights Commission Chair Sekou Sirleaf called the move “shameful” and a step backward. While the city will not host the event, local organizations are attempting to organize private celebrations.
