NASA has successfully completed a high-speed taxi test for its Cross Flow Attenuated Natural Laminar Flow (CATNLF) design, a technology aimed at making future aircraft more efficient. The 3-foot scale model, mounted beneath an F-15 research aircraft, reached speeds of 144 mph.
The design increases laminar flow and reduces drag to improve aerodynamics. Computational studies suggest applying this technology to large commercial aircraft could save up to 10% in fuel annually. If flight tests, scheduled to begin soon, prove successful, CATNLF could significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions in commercial and potentially supersonic aviation.
