To enable future missions to Mars, NASA is launching the “Mars to Table” challenge, a global competition to design a complete, Earth-independent food system for long-duration space travel. Building on a previous initiative, this challenge integrates food production and preparation into a holistic concept suitable for Martian astronauts.
The competition is open to chefs, scientists, and innovators, offering a prize purse of up to $750,000. Participants must design a full meal plan considering nutrition, safety, and taste. NASA notes that solutions for space could also address food security issues on Earth, aiding disaster relief and remote communities. The deadline for submissions is July 31.
