Winter Weather Advisory: More accumulating snow on the way for Cincinnati
IMMEDIATELY AS THEY ALWAYS DO. 516. GOT TO TALK ABOUT THE FORECAST. IT’S NOT STARTED YET, SO WE ALL LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUN. AND I THINK THAT MAKES ALL OF THIS VERY CONFUSING FOR PEOPLE. EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW WHAT’S TO COME HERE. IT’S JUST YOU WAKE UP AND YOU GO, OH, THERE IS NO SNOW YET. AND THAT’S THE FRUSTRATING PART OF THIS WHOLE THING, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THE SNOW IS GOING TO PICK UP FOR US KIND OF TOWARD THE END OF THE MORNING RUSH. IT’S GOING TO BE A LUNCHTIME AND EARLY AFTERNOON ISSUE, WHICH IS WHY THE SCHOOLS ARE MAINLY IMPACTED, BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT BUSSES AND TEEN DRIVERS. AND RIGHT AT A TIME WHERE THE ROADS COULD BE VERY QUESTIONABLE. SURE. LIKE THE DECISION TO DO AN EARLY DISMISSAL WOULD BE TOUGH BECAUSE OF THE TIMING. YOU’RE THROWING THEM RIGHT INTO THE MESS OF IT. SO AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT TODAY’S SNOW, HERE’S THE TIMELINE. IT STARTS MID-MORNING SOMETIME BETWEEN ABOUT SEVEN AND 9 A.M. WE HAVE SOME PRETTY DRY AIR RIGHT NOW ABOVE CINCINNATI, SO IT’S GOING TO MOISTEN UP A LITTLE BIT BEFORE THE SNOW ACTUALLY STARTS TO MAKE IT TO THE GROUND. SO 7 TO 9:00 IS KIND OF THE START TIME. IT WILL PICK UP LATE MORNING AND MIDDAY. SO ANY TIME GETTING CLOSER TO LUNCHTIME, THAT’S WHEN I WOULD ANTICIPATE SOME OF THE HEAVIER BANDS TO START TO DEVELOP. AND THOSE WILL STICK AROUND INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON. THE SNOW GENERALLY EXITS TO THE SOUTHEAST BETWEEN 3 P.M. AND 5 P.M., SO THIS IS A SNOW THAT IS GOING TO KICK IN DURING THE WORKDAY, AND SNOW FALLING BY THE TIME WE GET TO THE EVENING RUSH. BUT OF COURSE THE ROADS WILL BE COVERED AT THAT POINT. THE IMPACT SNOW RAPIDLY ACCUMULATING, ESPECIALLY MIDDAY. AT TIMES WE COULD HAVE SNOWFALL RATES OF ONE HALF INCH OR MORE PER HOUR, SO THE ROADS WILL QUICKLY GET COVERED. AND AS FAR AS SNOWFALL TOTALS GO, ALL AREAS END UP WITH 1 TO 3IN, BUT SOME WILL END UP WITH 3 TO 5 AND WE’LL HAVE TO WATCH TOWARD MIDDAY AND EARLY AFTERNOON TO SEE WHERE SOME OF THE RAPID SNOWFALL RATES ARE KIND OF PICKING UP. AND AS OF RIGHT NOW, IT LOOKS LIKE THAT COULD BE RIGHT IN THE HEART OF GREATER CINCINNATI. SO WE KIND OF HIGHLIGHTED THAT WITH THIS DARKER BLUE ZONE ON OUR EXPECTED SNOWFALL MAP, YOU CAN SEE EVERYBODY 1 TO 3IN. BUT SOMEWHERE IN THIS AREA OF THE 275 LOOP OR NORTHERN KENTUCKY ALONG THE OHIO RIVER AND JUST NORTH IN THIS ZONE, SOMEWHERE WILL BE THE HEAVIEST BANDS OF SNOW SETTING UP MIDDAY, AND THAT WILL END UP GIVING FOLKS 3 TO 5IN OF SNOW IN THAT AREA. IS GOING TO BE THIS WHOLE AREA. PROBABLY NOT. BUT SOMEWHERE IN HERE IS WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO GET THE HEAVIER SNOWFALL TOTALS. AND IF THAT’S RIGHT, ON OUR MAIN AREA HIGHWAYS, THAT COULD BE A BIG CONCERN HERE. AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON. ALL RIGHT. IF I SHOW YOU THE BIG RADAR, YOU’RE GOING TO GO, HEY, HERE’S THE SNOW. BUT I TOLD YOU, IT’S VERY DRY HERE IN OUR ATMOSPHERE AT THE MOMENT. SO WE HAVE TO MOISTEN UP THIS AIR COLUMN BEFORE THIS ALL MAKES IT TO THE GROUND. IT EVAPORATES BEFORE IT GETS TO US. AT LEAST RIGHT NOW. IT’S ALSO ONLY 5 A.M., SO GOT A COUPLE OF HOURS HERE BEFORE WE ACTUALLY SEE ANY SNOW SHOWERS MAKE IT TO US. EVEN THOUGH THE RADAR IS TRYING TO PICK SOME UP OVER TOWARD VERSAILLES. I DOUBT IF YOU LOOK OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW IN RIPLEY COUNTY, YOU’RE SEEING ANY SNOWFLAKES FLYING, BUT WE KEEP CHECKING THE OBSERVATIONS WELL, BACK INTO ILLINOIS AND EVERYTHING SHOWING THINGS ARE STILL PRETTY DRY. NOW, IN ADVANCE OF THIS SYSTEM, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS PLACED MUCH OF OUR AREA UNDER A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY, SAVE FOR FAYETTE AND UNION COUNTIES. THEY’VE ALSO NOTED, THOUGH, ONCE THOSE HEAVIER BANDS SET UP, IT IS LIKELY THAT THE COUNTIES WHERE THIS WILL BE HEAVIER SNOW MAY GET UPGRADED TO A WINTER STORM WARNING AT SOME POINT HERE. DURING THIS EVENT, SO LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE HOUR BY HOUR OUTLOOK THIS MORNING. WE HAVE CLOUDY SKIES. THINGS ARE FAIRLY QUIET. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN NOW AND ABOUT 7 A.M. THERE COULD BE OUR FIRST FLURRIES OF THE DAY, BUT IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE CLOSER TO EIGHT AND 9 A.M. BEFORE WE REALLY START TO SEE SOME SNOW. SO WE’RE STILL PERHAPS 3 OR 4 HOURS AWAY FROM SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL STARTING. SO AS WE HEAD TOWARD THE END OF THE MORNING RUSH, SNOW SHOWERS BASICALLY DEVELOPING OVERHEAD BETWEEN CINCINNATI AND INDIANAPOLIS AND THEN AMPING UP IN INTENSITY AS WE GET TOWARD THE LATE MORNING AND LUNCHTIME. IF YOU NOTICE THAT CORRIDOR OF DEEPER BLUES SITTING OVER TOP OF HAMILTON COUNTY, NORTHERN KENTUCKY, AND AREAS TO THE EAST, THESE CONTINUE THROUGH LUNCHTIME, MAYBE EVEN AMPING UP. AND THEN BY THE TIME WE GET TO ABOUT 3:00, AREAS NORTH OF THE RIVER WILL BE DRYING OUT. BUT SOME OF THOSE INTENSE SNOW BANDS SINKING TO THE SOUTH AND OUT OF HERE, BY THE TIME WE GET TO, SAY, 5:00 OR SO. SO WE’LL BE DRIER INTO THE EVENING, WHICH MEANS ROAD CREWS HAVE ALL NIGHT TO CLEAR OUT THE SNOW AND MAKE THINGS A LITTLE BIT BETTER FOR WEDNESDAY MORNING’S RUSH. YOUR 12 HOUR FORECAST SHOWS TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S HERE THROUGH THE DAY. OBVIOUSLY, WEATHER IMPACTS SYMBOL STARTING AT 8 A.M. SO 29 DEGREES TODAY. WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY SNOW HEAVY AT TIMES. PLAN ON 1 TO 3. BUT THEY’RE GOING TO BE SPOTS TO GET 3 TO 5. YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST SHOWS AN ADDITIONAL ROUND OF SNOW COMING OUR WAY ON FRIDAY. WE’VE BEEN MONITORING THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS FRIDAY CLIPPER. CURRENT TIMING WOULD BE 8 A.M. THROUGH 1 P.M. SO ANOTHER MORNING ISSUE. GREAT SLICK TRAVEL CONDITIONS AND WE GO ABOVE FREEZING. AFTER THAT SNOW MOVES OUT AND THEN COLDER AIR RUSHES BACK IN FOR SUPER BOWL WEEKEND. ALL RIGHT. LET’S GET OVER TO ADAM AND SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE ROADS THIS MORNING. YEAH. ALL DRY OUT THERE SO FAR THIS MO
