Local government minister Alison McGovern confirmed the government will likely approve requests to postpone local elections in May for 63 councils undergoing reorganization. Council leaders had until January 15 to request a delay.
Survey results show a split: 34 councils intend to hold elections, while 23 requested postponements, with estimates suggesting up to 27 may eventually ask. If approved, 5.2 million residents and 3.7 million voters will lose their chance to vote this year.
While the Conservative party has delayed elections in specific areas, they have criticized these latest postponements, accusing Labour of being “scared of voters” despite their own past actions.
