The ONS has released the UK’s first official mortality data based on sexual orientation. The analysis reveals LGB+ people in England and Wales are significantly more likely to die by suicide, drug overdose, or from alcohol-related diseases than their heterosexual counterparts.
This statistical insight was made possible by the 2021 Census, which for the first time asked residents aged 16 and over about their sexual orientation. The ONS used this data to analyze mortality rates from March 2021 through November 2024. The report specifically uses the acronym “LGB+” rather than the broader “LGBTQ+”, focusing on those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or other non-heterosexual orientations.
