Keke Palmer is opening up about how motherhood changed her.
The Nope actress, 32, made an appearance on the Monday, Feb. 2 episode of Today to talk about her upcoming project The Burbs, where she portrays a mom on-screen for the first time. Palmer, who’s a mother to son Leodis, 2, shared that playing a mother in her latest project “gave me so much more than I knew it would.”
“I guess I should have expected it. After you have kids, it really does expand your heart in a way you can’t imagine until it happens,” she explained. “And so, I definitely put that into the character Samira for sure.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the doting mom gave an update on her toddler son, who’s turning 3 at the end of the month. She joked that her son is “being terrible” as he rounds out his “terrible two” stage.
“He has a really crazy attitude. He would tell me, ‘Mommy, what you doing for me? What you doing for me?’ ” she said with a bright smile. “He’s speaking his baby language, but I’m right there doing everything I can to make sure I show up.”
While Palmer loves every moment with her son, she’s also very candid about some of the more challenging moments. Last October, the One of Them Days actress, who shares her son with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, shared a series of adorable photos alongside her son on Instagram, in which the mother-son duo can be seen smiling and laughing together.
While the two are giggling and having fun together, Palmer got honest in the caption about how tough parenthood can be.
“Omg I think my baby is a performer yall! Hahahahahah!!! Yall see him putting on for the camera???” Palmer began her lengthy caption.
“This is to all my mother’s doing it on their own,” she continued. “Not as a moment of pity or as a badge of hardship because being a mother is difficult, period. I just want to acknowledge you! It has been a really hard week for me and I honestly try very hard not to make TOO personal of posts.”

She went on to say that the point she’s trying to make is the same one she’s telling herself.
“You are doing good. You are capable. Your baby does love you. Your sacrifices are accounted for. God is with you. Your prayers will be answered, keep praying. God is with you,” said Palmer. “You are more than what you do for others. If no one has your back know that God does and that your baby is your greatest reflection of that. Don’t give up on you you’re worth it.”
Palmer also said that moms are “allowed to have a bad day, a bad week, a bad month” and that it’s okay if their kids see that.
“It’s okay that they see we are human and we communicate our feelings. I would see my mom sad, I would see my dad sad, I watched them be human and I think I’m a better person because of it,” she said. “Sending you the love I’d like to receive but don’t ask for cause you know, mommas. 😉 ❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
