GameStop’s slow decline appears to be accelerating. Despite surviving six and a half years longer than anticipated following the meme stock surge, the retailer is now aggressively closing stores.
After shutting down 590 US locations in fiscal 2024, GameStop recently closed an additional 400 stores and plans to shutter hundreds more internationally. With global store counts plummeting from nearly 6,000 in 2019 to roughly 3,200 today, the trend signals a significant contraction for the struggling video game retailer.
