According to the December CPI report, inflation rose, with the index increasing 0.4% for the month and 2.9% annually. The data largely met economist forecasts.
While headline inflation increased, core CPI—which excludes volatile food and energy prices—posted its smallest monthly gain in months, rising only 0.2%. Annually, core prices were up 3.2%. While the rise in headline inflation was largely driven by higher energy and shelter costs, core inflation showed signs of cooling, likely bringing relief to consumers and the Federal Reserve.
