Europol coordinated a law enforcement coalition that shut down Cryptomixer, a cryptocurrency laundering service used by cybercriminals to hide illicit funds from activities like drug and weapons trafficking. Since 2016, the platform allegedly laundered 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in Bitcoin by obfuscating transaction origins on the blockchain. Authorities seized 25 million euros ($29 million) in Bitcoin, servers, data, and the domain. Cryptomixer offered anonymity, pooling and redistributing funds randomly to obscure the trail. This allowed criminals to exchange “cleaned” crypto for other currencies or cash. Similar services like Tornado Cash have also been targeted by law enforcement.
