Elon Musk announced that Tesla is reviving its Dojo3 AI chip project, shifting its focus from Earth-based self-driving training to “space-based AI compute.” This comes five months after Tesla disbanded the Dojo team following the departure of key staff to a new AI startup.
The decision marks a pivot from Tesla’s recent strategy to rely on external partners like Nvidia and AMD. With Tesla’s newer AI chips (AI5 and AI6) now in development, Musk aims to repurpose Dojo3 for a more ambitious vision: powering AI data centers in orbit.
Musk argues that space-based compute could bypass Earth’s power constraints, leveraging SpaceX’s launch capabilities to deploy solar-powered satellite constellations. However, significant technical challenges remain, including cooling systems in a vacuum. As competition heats up—with Nvidia recently unveiling a rival autonomous driving model—Musk is actively recruiting engineers to tackle this “moonshot” project.
