Physicists use a simplified “particle picture” to describe electron behavior in materials, despite its inherent quantum limitations. Interestingly, researchers at TU Wien discovered that even in a material where this particle model completely fails, exotic topological states—features previously believed to depend on particle-like behavior—can still emerge. This finding challenges the conventional understanding of how these unique electronic states form.
