Aging stars transitioning into red giants are eliminating their closest giant planets, according to new research. A study using NASA’s TESS telescope analyzed almost half a million stars and revealed a significant absence of close-orbiting planets around older, expanded stars. This suggests that as stars age and grow, they engulf and destroy planets in close proximity, supporting the theory of stellar cannibalism. This discovery provides valuable insight into the lifecycle of planetary systems and the ultimate fate of planets orbiting aging stars.
