A large genetic study has revealed hundreds of genes essential for transforming stem cells into brain cells, including the previously unknown gene PEDS1. Dysfunction in PEDS1 is now linked to a rare neurodevelopmental disorder in children that impairs brain growth and nerve cell formation.
