Red Sea shipping diversions due to conflict inadvertently provided a natural experiment to study low-sulfur marine fuels’ impact on clouds. With ships rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, scientists observed the effect of these cleaner fuels on cloud formation. The study found that the switch to low-sulfur fuels significantly weakens ships’ ability to create bright, reflective clouds, reducing this cloud-boosting effect by approximately two-thirds. This real-world experiment highlights the dramatic influence of cleaner fuels on cloud formation and underscores the potential climate implications.
