In December, Russian state-sponsored hackers known as Sandworm attempted to disrupt Poland’s energy grid, the Polish government and cybersecurity firm ESET reported. The attack targeted two heat and power plants and communications links for renewable energy installations, which local media said could have cut power to 500,000 homes. ESET identified destructive “wiper” malware named “DynoWiper,” linking it to Sandworm based on previous attacks against Ukraine. While Polish Energy Minister Milosz Motyka called it the country’s most severe energy attack in years, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that critical infrastructure remained secure due to effective cybersecurity defenses.
