Astronomers observed the nearby active galaxy VV 340a to study the dramatic impact of a supermassive black hole. Using telescopes, they detected a weak but restless jet spinning like a top as it blasts outward from the galaxy’s core. This wobbling jet interacts violently with surrounding gas, heating and ionizing the material while propelling it out of the galaxy at surprisingly high speeds.
