Plastic-coated fertilizers are a hidden source of microplastics in the ocean. A new study reveals that while a small fraction reaches beaches via rivers, direct drainage from fields sends far more plastic back to the shore. Waves briefly trap these particles on beaches, but many vanish again, explaining why so much plastic seems to disappear after reaching the ocean.
