President Donald Trump’s duties on imported goods are paid almost entirely by American importers, their domestic customers and ultimately US consumers, a study from a German think tank concluded.
The study, conducted by the Munich-based Ifo Institute, found that the tariffs imposed during Trump’s presidency cost US companies and consumers an estimated $3 billion per month by the end of his term. The researchers determined that importers passed approximately 45% of the tariff costs onto customers in the form of higher prices, while absorbing the remaining 55% themselves. The Ifo Institute noted that the financial burden largely remained within the US economy, rather than being paid by foreign exporters or the Chinese government.
