Anahita Laverack, inspired by autonomous robotics challenges, pivoted from aerospace engineering to found Oshen in April 2022 with Ciaran Dowds. Frustrated by a lack of ocean data causing robot failures, they developed C-Stars: autonomous micro-robots that can survive at sea for 100 days.
Operating on a shoestring budget initially, the team tested their tech in the challenging waters around the UK. Their persistence paid off; Oshen recently deployed 15 C-Stars for NOAA, with three successfully weathering Hurricane Humberto—the first robots to collect data through a Category 5 hurricane. The company has since secured contracts with the U.K. government and plans to raise venture capital to meet growing demand.
