Elon Musk’s xAI has been operating dozens of natural gas turbines illegally at its Colossus data center in Tennessee, according to a final EPA ruling issued Thursday. The agency rejected xAI’s defense that the turbines were exempt from regulations due to “temporary” use, officially declaring the company in violation after a year-long review.
The operation drew lawsuits from local communities and legal groups, citing excessive ozone and particulate emissions in an air-quality-impaired region. While xAI deployed as many as 35 turbines, only 15 were ever permitted. Currently, 12 turbines remain active to power the facility.
