Facing a $188 million shortfall, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has released a draft of proposed budget cuts totaling $142 million. Superintendent Brian Yearwood attributed the deficit to years of systemic fiscal unsustainability and reliance on temporary funding.
The proposed cuts include:
* $44 million from central office (eliminating 300 positions)
* $41 million from non-instructional school budgets
* $13 million from operations and transportation
* $9 million from contracts
* $5 million from facilities
* $30 million pending union negotiations
While Yearwood stated the cuts aim to protect teachers, closing schools remains a possibility. Employees will be notified by May 15, and the board will approve a final budget in September.
