NASA’s Dragonfly mission, launching in 2028 to explore Saturn’s moon Titan, has successfully completed critical aerodynamic testing at NASA Langley’s Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. Engineers evaluated the car-sized rotorcraft’s rotor system under Titan-like conditions to ensure it can fly in the dense atmosphere. Key components were recently fabricated at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and underwent rigorous testing to validate the design. The mission has also collaborated with Penn State University and Sikorsky Aircraft for technical support. These successful trials mark major progress toward the rotorcraft’s 2034 arrival at Titan to search for prebiotic chemical processes.
