During a CDC meeting, presenters made claims downplaying hepatitis B transmission and vaccine efficacy, despite evidence to the contrary. Presenter Nevison incorrectly attributed the decline in hepatitis B infections to factors other than vaccination. Referencing her own unvetted modelling she incorrectly stated that the CDC scientists overestimate the risk of transmission, and incorrectly claims that vaccinations do not offer lifelong protection, based on a misunderstanding of the underlying study.
Another presenter, anti-vaccine activist Mark Blaxill, discussed vaccine safety despite lacking relevant expertise, he has a history of spreading false information linking vaccines to harm. Pediatrician Amy Middleman, author of a study cited by Nevison, clarified that her research demonstrated robust, lifelong immune protection from the hepatitis B vaccine through an anamnestic response, countering Nevison’s misinterpretation.
