Scientists are using precisely aligned laser beams to trap and observe the charging behavior of single aerosol particles. By analyzing the particle’s glow, they can track the gain and loss of electrons, including sudden bursts of charge release. This method provides insights into the charging processes within storm clouds, which could explain the initial sparks that lead to lightning. The new technique offers a controlled environment for studying complex atmospheric electricity phenomena at the micro-level.
